The In an Instant episode ‘Lost in Snow’ tells the horrifying story of two boys, cousins Elijah “Papito” Martinez (11) and Jason “JJ” Riveria (9), who were accidentally buried under piles of heavy snow in 2014. On the eve of Thanksgiving in Newburgh, New York, the boys were building a snow fort when a snowplow unknowingly dumped piles of snow on of the fort and the boys. Parents became concerned when the boys missed their 10 o’clock curfew. A search began but it was eight hours before the boys were found and rescued by police and neighbors.
At a news conference at the hospital where the boys were recovering, they said they kept talking to each so they wouldn’t fall asleep. Elijah said, “I felt so tired. It didn’t feel real that they were coming to get us.” The boys were conscious when they were rescued. Jason said: “I’m just glad they got that big block off my chest, that was heavy.” In an Instant airs Saturdays at 9pm on ABC.
