The genius guru author behind Game of Thrones doesn’t just live in the worlds he creates in his imagination — even though a lot of other people do! No, George R.R. Martin keeps at least one foot firmly planted in the real world. Martin described himself as “an HBO guy” in a recent post on his LiveJournal, saying that fellow HBO juggernaut Westworld may be the favorite over Game of Thrones this awards season — and that he was happy about it. (Hey, it’s not like Game of Thrones has no trophies.)
Besides being an HBO guy and keeping track of who wins what shiny hardware, Martin is also aware — since he helped make it so — that we live in the so-called “golden age of television.” This fact is poignant to Martin because three out of the five 2016 Golden Globe nominees during this golden age are “genre shows… another sign of just how far we’ve come,” he writes. That third one? Stranger Things, whose inclusion on the list “delighted” Martin. Also proves Martin’s not a company man through and through — Stranger Things is a Netflix gig.
