Universal hired Straight Outta Compton writer Jonathan Herman to write a script for a Scarface remake. Pablo Larrain will direct the film that will be set in Los Angeles and explore “an immigrant’s rise in the criminal underworld.” Marty Bregman ,who produced the 1983 version, is on board too.
When Al Pacino, who played the Cuban refugee-turned-drug-kingpin Tony Montana in Scarface, was asked about the remake he said the studio’s plans were “interesting.” He added, “It’s part of what we do. We remake things.” Remember the original Scarface was released in 1932. It starred Paul Muni as Tony, a violent gangster who climbs the ladder of success in the mob.
