New Edition: The Movie takes a long look at the history of the all-boy R&B group New Edition. The story starts at the beginning — when five young kids in the projects of Roxbury, Massachusetts started singing and dancing in Ricky Bell’s living room — to when lead singer Bobby Brown goes rogue on stage. Part of the story includes the sixth and final member of New Edition, Johnny Gill, who replaced Bobby Brown for a while.

In New Edition: The Movie, Johnny Gill is portrayed by two-time Grammy Award-nominated singer/songwriter Luke James. He has appeared in three movies since he launched his acting career in 2011. The most notable is the 2013 family film Black Nativity with Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett and Jennifer Hudson — it’s based on the play by Langston Hughes, an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance. New Edition: The Movie Part I airs Tuesday, January 24 at 8pm on BET.
