Last week Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 16th studio album, Hypnotic Eye, held the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. This week the 12-song soundtrack for the Marvel Studios film Guardians of the Galaxy has kicked Tom “I Won’t Back Down” Petty, well, down. Guardians of the Galaxy is composed by Tyler Bates, a guitarist for Marilyn Manson. Well, sometimes. They play together when they can.
On June 27, 2014, Manson and Bates were ready to perform live at Moscow’s ‘Park Live Festival’ but on their way to the venue they were “doused with holy water by religious protesters,” according to Bates, and then escorted from the stage when bomb squad police cancelled the show. Their August performance at the Alt-Fest in Kettering, UK was also cancelled. Turns out composing mixtapes for comic book films is a more promising (and lucrative) than being in a band.
