A poor Louisiana family that got rich making duck calls (those kazoo-like whistlers) is the subject of A&E’s latest reality TV show: Duck Dynasty. The bearded men of the Robertson family resemble the band members of ZZ Top, who wrote the show’s theme song, “Sharp Dressed Man.” Viewers watch the Robertsons struggle to teach their now rich kids and grandkids the value of hard work. Pitch to producer: ask them who they’ll vote for (Obama or Romney)–or even better, which duck call suits which candidate best.
TV may be the only place where reality and politics meet. Last spring another southern reality TV family, TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting” Duggar clan in Arkansas, traveled to Louisiana to campaign for Rick Santorum. The PA senator won that Republican primary even after he said he would rather have Obama for a second term than a Romney presidency. Santorum, of course, wore a sweater vest; Romney is by most accounts a sharp-dressed man. As ZZ crooned: Cuff links, stick pin / when I step out I’m gonna do you in.
