Much has changed in media and advertising, but one thing remains constant: advertisers want to reach the “coveted” 18-49 year old demographic. And if your show is #1 there, you’re #1 in the hearts and wallets of all the big brands. That’s where the zombies come in. The Walking Dead has held onto the #1 spot in the 18-49 year old demographic for five straight seasons. The show has suffered a bit in ratings as it’s aged — and drawn plenty of disappointed fans’ rants online (that means they care) — but like the zombies they are, The Walking Dead keeps rising for more.
Entering its 9th season overall, The Walking Dead has shaken things up a bit, elevating longtime writer and co-exec producer Angela Kang to executive producer and show runner. Former showrunner Scott M. Gimple has been given creative control of the overall Walking Dead franchise. With the changes, The Walking Dead will premiere season 9 on AMC in 2018 with the aim of holding onto its #1 spot in the key demographic. That accomplishment would mark The Walking Dead‘s sixth straight year in first place, meaning that The Walking Dead will have held the top spot for two-thirds of the seasons during which it has aired.
Angela Kang is all in on The Walking Dead, to the point where she shares killer fan art on Twitter:
