Producers Guild Award Nominees Announced: ‘Selma’ And ‘Unbroken’ Snubbed

The first brick in the road to the Oscars has been laid. This afternoon the Producers Guild of America announced the nominees for the 26th Producers Guild Awards. (Saturday’s National Society of Film Critics Awards were important too, but they’re more akin to the caution tape you put up around a half-built road than the actual bricks in the road itself.) Ten films are nominated for Best Film (or, to give it its official title, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures), and most of the ten movies will probably be recognized by the other Guild Awards, and eventually the Oscars. As the Huffington Post notes, since 1995 “no Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards has failed to secure a PGA nomination.”

The ten films are American Sniper, Birdman, Boyhood, Foxcatcher, Gone Girl, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, Nightcrawler, The Theory of Everything, and Whiplash. Selma, Unbroken, Into the Woods, and Interstellar were all ignored. On the television front, it was a lineup of the usual suspects: Breaking Bad, House of Cards, True Detective, Game of Thrones, and Downton Abbey will compete for Best Drama. The PGA Awards will be handed out on January 24th.
