Kelli Connell’s series of photographs “Double Life” at first appears to document the everyday life of a lesbian couple. Perhaps Double Life refers to the women not yet out of the closet? Look closer and you’ll notice the women resemble each other. Could they be twins? Identical twins in incestual positions?
Alas, the content is not that provocative. Connell has photographed a friend, the subject of the series, in numerous personal settings and then shopped the images to produce the effect of two individual female lovers sharing a moment. Once the “woman-made” process is understood, the images lose substance. Unless the manufactured zygote marries a body bifurcated by the digital dispersion of self dictated by online avatars and…nevermind. It’s the other thing – unsubstantial.
