There’s a masked man lurking the pages of design sites. It’s Beardo – a male model wearing a knitted cap with matching knitted beard. Funny, weird, and strangely attractive – after trying to ignore the ad for weeks, we clicked and were lead to Fab.com. The well-funded, well-stocked site tempts millions of consumers to buy new and vintage ephemera, and the occasional amalgamation – Keith Haring skate decks, redesigned Jaws movie posters. Fab sells everything from furniture to fish tanks but what all the products have in common is personality (and a great stylist!).
Sales success on Fab has led Jeff Phillips, the Canadian snowboarder who came up with Beardo, to expand his fake facial hair accessory line with silicone clip-on bottle mustaches. Slip on a “BeerMo” handlebar mustache around the neck of a beer (or baby pacifier) and transform yourself (or baby) into Ron Burgundy, Al Sharpton or John Waters (6-pack $10). They come in multi-colors to help everyone keep track of their drinks. Fun and functional, as good design should be. (Note to Fab.com: contact Iron Hill Brewery, they just tapped a stout called “Tom Selleck’s Mustache.”)
