In The Chi episode “Today Was a Good Day,” on the South Side of Chicago Brandon (Jason Mitchell), Ronnie (Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine), Emmett (Jacob Latimore) and Kevin (Alex R. Hibbert) reunite at a neighborhood party. Later, Brandon has a confrontation with Ronnie and gets surprised by his girlfriend from the “right” side of the tracks, Jerrika. Keep in mind Jerrika wants to open a restaurant with Brandon. Note: This episode was written by poet/playwright Marcus Gardley who The New Yorker describes as “an interesting heir to Garcia Lorca, Pirandello and Tennessee Williams.”
Jerrika is portrayed by Tiffany Boone. She’s also known for her roles on Complications (Ingrid), Once Upon a Time (Young Ursula), Major Crimes (Keisha Perry), The Following with Kevin Bacon (Mandy Lang), and Southland (Crystal), among others. Boone is also recognized for her role as Savannah Snow in the 2013 film Beautiful Creatures with Viola Davis and Emma Thompson. The Chi airs Sundays at 10pm on Showtime.
