Donald Glover has been a busy man since his star turn in the smash hit Community ended. He’s dropped a couple of albums as the inspirationally named rapper Childish Gambino and he’s been part of a journey to outer space in The Martian. But the Atlanta streets have been calling his name. Now he’s bringing a version of Atlanta he’s pretty sure you haven’t seen to FX. The title of the show is simply Atlanta, which indicates that even though we may not have seen this Atlanta on TV before, this really is Atlanta. Atlanta, in that case, is a damn funny place.
Glover gave Business Insider a couple of great quotes that put the show in perspective. He didn’t want to do a show about people making it, or about “the struggle” — because that’s not what most of life is about. And it’s not that interesting, he says. Plus, Glover says, the “struggle” scenario is “super easy for people to do, especially with black shows.” What’s the secret that Glover has discovered that allows him to show us an Atlanta that we’ve never seen? Glover is incisive here, confident he’s bringing the one thing that’s been missing from Atlanta shows in the past — and pretty much from all entertainment. “It needs to feel like you’re black, you know?” he says. Tune in for Atlanta on Tuesdays, 10pm on Fox.
