Ever since Natalia Poklonskaya, Crimea’s newly-appointed attorney general, was filmed answering reporters’ questions at a press conference in March, Japan has been entranced. She’s young with wispy blond hair and has the big blue watery eyes found on many female anime characters. The video of the press conference was posted to a Japanese YouTube channel (YouTubi), and has been viewed nearly 800,000 times. There’s no translation, but it should be known that she voiced criticism of the opposition protests in Ukraine.
While the Ukrainian government has launched a criminal case against her, Japanese artists are producing a variety of manga images and anime fan art inspired by her soft looks and glowing eyes.
