On the Growing Up Hip Hop episode ‘Boogie Down’, while the DeBarge family deals with a revealed family secret, the recently engaged and pregnant Angela Simmons gets her nails done with her mother Valerie Vaughn. At the nail salon, Angela asks her mother what her wedding was like. “How did your wedding go? Were you nervous or excited?” asks Angela. Her mother says, “I was so tired.” (Here’s the part where Angela gets blindsided.) Turns out Valerie was three months pregnant with Joseph “JoJo” Ward Simmons, Jr., when she married Angela’s father Joseph Ward Simmons aka Rev Run in 1983. (After their divorce, Rev Run remarried in 1994 to Justine Jones.)
“It’s so weird,” Angela responds later to the camera. “She got married and she was pregnant at the same time. Interesting.” Growing Up Hip Hop airs Thursdays at 9pm on WEtv.
