In the American Greed episode ‘Seattle Roasted; The Stealing Socialite,’ the stealing socialite refers to Dina Wein Reis. The Manhattan businesswoman wined and dined several Fortune 500 executives at her tony brownstone under the guise that she was looking to hire top executives for her company. The potential candidates were asked to provide discounted goods for distribution as samples at retail stores. Instead she allegedly sold the discounted goods for profit. Reis pleaded guilty in 2011 to a federal charge of conspiracy to commit wire. In 2013, she was sentenced to 19-months in prison and ordered to pay $7 million in restitution. She reportedly sold her art collection at Sotheby’s in order to pay.
Reis’ attorney suggested that his client serve the sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, the low-security prison where homemaking maven Martha Stewart did her time. The Danbury prison became even more famous after it was featured in the Netflix show Orange Is the New Black. Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice did her time there, too. American Greed airs Thursdays at 10pm on CNBC.
