After 30 years of wishing for its own museum, the town of Exeter, CA (pop. 10, 466) finally got one. Local history buffs raised $1 million to renovate the former Mt. Whitney Power Company Substation into the Exeter Historical Museum which displays everything from Native American Yokohl artifacts to historical photographs from the Sheriff’s office.
The museum’s curator, Chris Brewer, was recently awarded the 2010 Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation. When not managing the Exeter Flower Company and the local bookstore in downtown Exeter (with his wife), he’s writing and publishing historical books for his imprint Bear State Books. Interesting people in this interesting town, one with a classic Carnegie library and where 28 murals depicting the town’s history have been painted throughout the downtown area.
