Oprah has chosen “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail” by Cheryl Strayed to revive her influential book club after a two year hiatus. The O-approved eBook edition includes Ms. Winfrey’s personal notes highlighted within the text. One wonders how Strayed (a once anonymous advice columnist at The Rumpus) was vetted after the embarrassing James Fry “A Million Little Pieces” “memoir” incident.
Perhaps it’s just that Oprah loves soul-searching, advice and people who give it. She works a bit in this line herself, of course. And we have her to thank for Dr. Phil and the other Oprah acolytes there get you on the path to Found. Welcome, Ms Strayed. There must also be some comfort in the fact-checking department: Strayed took her mountain journey solo. Who’s to say what happened? Readers who aren’t looking for big beautiful things can now pre-order Strayed’s third book, “Tiny Beautiful Things,” available in July.
