Jada Pinkett Smith is nude and singing “Nada Se Compara” in a music video (directed by family friend Salma Hayek) to raise awareness about human trafficking and sex slavery. Founder of the organization Don’t Sell Bodies, Pinkett Smith and her husband Will Smith were thanked for their efforts last week at the State Department during Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s release of the horrifying 2012 Trafficking in Persons Report.
Raising awareness of the tragic epidemic of sexual exploitation is clearly to the good. But the juxtaposition between the beautifully manicured Pinkett Smith in a Herb Ritts-esque photo shoot (black and white, arched back, vacant stares) and the real and all too common narrative about a young girl who trusts the wrong man, only to be traded as a sex slave, is jarring.
