Young tap dancer Kyle Van Newkirk of Henry, Nebraska has made it past the qualifying round on the TV competition World of Dance. He won the World Championships of Tap Dance in 2015, so he knows how to compete but on World of Dance, the tapper is now facing the internationally famous French hip hop dancers Les Twins in a Dancing Duel. As World of Dance host Jenna Dewan Tatum says, “It’s a David vs Goliath kind of duel.”

Based on the scores submitted by the World of Dance judges — JLo, Ne-Yo, and Derek Hough — only one act will advance. Kyle might have an advantage with judge Hough, who is a fellow tapper and a huge fan of the late great Fred Astaire, just like Kyle. Check out Kyle’s tribute to Astaire’s performance in Puttin’ On the Ritz. World of Dance airs Tuesdays at 10pm on NBC.
