Bill Maher will talk with political strategist Matt Schlapp on Friday night. With the Obamacare repeal and Trumpcare replacement dominating the news, one of the bigger forces in the melee has been the Koch brothers. Koch Industries is one of Schlapp’s roster of clients at Cove Strategies, the political consulting firm he founded with his wife. The Kochs, wealthy industrialists who helped establish the Tea Party, have been trying to reassure wary GOP congress members that they can stand their ground on health care without fearing Trump. (The Kochs reportedly pledged millions to members facing re-election in 2018.) The Kochs think the so-called Trumpcare doesn’t go far enough in scaling back government involvement.
Schlapp’s client list also includes Walmart, The Dow Chemical Company, The Ford Motor Company, American Coalition of Clean Coal Electricity, and the Motion Picture Association of America. Schlapp may have a client list dominated by conservative-leaning organizations, but he can surprise — a bit like Maher himself. For instance Schlapp just retweeted a Politico story with the headline: “RNC paid intel firm for Clinton dirt.” One thing is certain, Schlapp never does anything by accident and always has a motive. Schlapp is Chair of the American Conservative Union. The ACU’s 8-point statement of beliefs can be found here. Schlapp worked in George W. Bush’s White House.
