Disney is doing a remake of Splash, the heartwarming mermaid tale that Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah won hearts with in 1984. In keeping with the times, Disney will do a gender switch on the starfish-crossed lovers, with leading man Channing Tatum getting the tail and marvelous writer/actress/comedian Jillian Bell stepping into Hanks’ big flippers. Bell may be less well-known than her co-star, but she is perfectly cast to shine in the role.
Bell, 32, is an improv comedy veteran and member of the famous Groundlings troupe. She’s best known for her role as Jillian Belk on Comedy Central’s Workaholics. She worked with Tatum before in 2014’s 22 Jump Street. Her improv bio from from the Groundlings reads in part: “Jillian is super jazzed to be a member of the Groundlings Main Company! She also likes to use the phrase “super jazzed.” Jillian was a writer for Saturday Night Live‘s 35th season in 2010.” She’s no doubt super jazzed about Splash. Like Bell, Hanks had worked mostly in TV before Splash made him a movie star.
