Ice Cube isn’t mad about the Straight Outta Compton Oscar snub. And he also wasn’t surprised. (He’ll take the #1 at the box office instead.) Besides, how could he be surprised? You don’t get to where Ice Cube is in show business by being naive. Plus if he had any doubts about where Straight Outta Compton was positioned as the Oscar nominations approached, then Jamie Foxx‘s brilliant half-Kanye, half-Steve Harvey at the Golden Globes was warning enough. Straight Outta Compton wasn’t on the Golden Globes nomination list for Best Original Score that Foxx was there to proclaim. But Foxx shouted out Compton anyway. And Foxx did it brilliantly, going half hilarious (Steve Harvey) and half aggressive (Kanye West), making both a simmering statement and a damn funny piece of theater.
Card in hand, Foxx originally said that Straight Outta Compton had won the award, despite not being nominated. Foxx just sort of took over the stage for a minute with his own idea of what should have won, a la Kanye. Then he did a pretty damn good earnest-sounding Steve Harvey in apology mode at the Miss Universe pageant — saying no it was his fault, he read it wrong. “Look, I’ll show you. It’s right there on the card,” Foxx said, doing Harvey verbatim. (Turns out Miss Philippines — no, wait — Ennio Morricone won The Globe, for The Hateful Eight.) Straight Outta Compton made over $200 million worldwide, according to Ice Cube. Academy Awards? Ho-hum.
