Performance artist Marina Abramović allowed hip hop mogul Jay Z to adapt her 2010 performance “The Artist Is Present” for his 2013 video “Picasso Baby.” For the video, which was filmed at New York’s Pace Gallery in front of a crowd, they performed together.
Now Abramović is saying that Jay Z did not fulfill his end of their deal. In an interview with art magazine Spike, she said “I am very pissed…he adapted my work only under one condition: that he would help my institute. Which he didn’t.” She is referring to the Marina Abramović Institute, an art educational center in Hudson, New York. She said of her experience with Jay Z: “he completely used me. And that wasn’t fair.”
