Dr. Seuss and Mo Willems are literary soul brothers–so it’s no surprise that the American Library Association selected Willems’ latest Elephant & Piggie book — Waiting Is Not Easy! — for the 2015 Geisel Honor. (Theodor Geisel is, of course, Dr. Seuss’s given name.)
As most parents these days would be able to tell you, Gerald is an exceedingly genial elephant who wears glasses and loves a pig named Piggie. Gerald and Piggie have a beautiful relationship in a stripped down world where emotions reign–and love and caring conquer all. Willems won six Emmys at Sesame Street before he started winning Caldecott medals for his children’s picture books, beginning with a very memorable pigeon. Btw, Willems won the Geisel Honor in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014, too. Willems’ books are just really very, very good. No child should grow up without them.
