The great American writer Susanna Moore has just started a blog about Hawaii. It’s called Paradise of the Pacific (Notes from Kohala) and if any of Moore’s previous endeavors are a guide, you don’t want to miss it. In addition to seven novels, Moore authored the brilliant memoir-cum-Hawaii-history I Myself Have Seen It: The Myth of Hawai’i, published in 2003 to rave reviews. She knows her subject well–and she returns to it now, quite literally.
The much honored Moore, who went to the same school in Hawaii (Punahou) that Barack Obama later attended, has lived in many places since–teaching at Princeton, Yale and the Brooklyn Federal Detention Center, for example. (And yes, she was once Warren Beatty’s assistant, but that’s another story.) Now thankfully Moore is back living in Hawaii and blogging about it. There could hardly be a better window on the beautiful, complicated, historically fascinating Hawaii than the eyes and ears of Susanna Moore. Feast!
