WEtv has found success with its reality show Growing Up Hip Hop, which features the (privileged) children of famous hip hop artists including Damon Dash, Rev Run, and Master P. Now Bravo is premiering First Family of Hip Hop. It follows the lives of the Robinsons, descendants of Joe and Sylvia Robinson, the husband and wife team behind Sugar Hill Records in Englewood, New Jersey. The label produced The Sugarhill Gang and their 1979 hit “Rapper’s Delight.” It’s considered the first Top 40 hip hop single.
Sugar Hill folded in 1985. Joe and Sylvia later divorced. (Joe died in 2000; Sylvia died in 2011.) But now some of the second and third generations of Robinsons including their son Leland Robinson, Sr. are looking to revive the label and make new music. First Family of Hip Hop airs Sundays at 9pm on Bravo.
