Zaevion Dobson was the 15-year-old football player at Fulton High School in Knoxville, Tennessee who died a hero. Dobson shielded three girls from a drive-by shooting on December 17, 2015. (The girls were not injured.) The heroic teen will be awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPY Awards 2016 which will be televised on Wednesday, July 13 at 8pm on ABC.
Just four months later, after attending an anti-gun celebrity basketball event honoring Zaevion, Zaevion’s 12-year-old cousin, JaJuan Latham, was shot in the head by another drive-by shooting. JaJuan was sitting in the backseat of his father’s truck waiting to go home after the event. Knoxville Police Chief David Rausch said at a press conference that week: “This has got to stop. This is the second innocent young person in our community that has had their life ended by senseless violence, by cowards.” He added, “This can’t go on. We do not need to bury any more children.”
