Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar for her performance in the 2006 film Dreamgirls in which she (as Effie White) sings the torch song, “And I Am Telling You, I’m Not Going.” On The Voice, another young singer named Shalyah Fearing performed the song with amazing confidence. Especially for a teenager, which Shalyah amazingly is. She’s 16 in fact — and she made her coach Adam Levine proud.
After that powerhouse performance, it’s easy to believe that Shalyah Fearing really is not going — as the song says. Not going anywhere on The Voice, that is. She looks to be hanging around. It’s easy to imagine that Shalyah thought about the fact — when she chose her song — that Jennifer Hudson, before she was winning Academy Awards, was a contestant on another popular reality network talent show. The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
