In the bloody new AMC TV series Preacher, a handsome young preacher in Texas, Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) is the complicated protagonist. While he has good intentions of helping people as a preacher, Jesse’s dark violent past comes back to haunt him. By his side is his “bad ass beautiful woman with a gun” — his childhood friend and former girlfriend Tulip O’Hare (Ruth Negga). When a supernatural event occurs at Jesse’s church, he turns to his new friend, religious skeptic Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), for help in finding God.
[‘Preacher’ is based on the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon]
It’s difficult to place Preacher in one genre — supernatural, gothic, Western, fantasy, adventure, drama. It’s also difficult to place the accents on the show. Cooper and Gilgun are Englishmen, and Negga is Ethiopian-Irish (raised in Limerick). Cooper and Negga portray their characters with Texan accents and Gilgun takes on an Irish accent for Cassidy. Preacher episodes have been directed by three American men: Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg (Superbad, Knocked Up, et al) and Michael Slovis (Breaking Bad). Preacher premieres on Sunday, May 22 at 10pm on AMC.
