When Pharrell Williams isn’t mentoring rising stars on The Voice, the self-described spiritual man likes to talk about stars, real stars — as in astrology. He realizes there are a lot of misconceptions out there about astrology so he asked Susan Miller, founder of Astrology Zone, to explain on Pharrell’s OTHERtone Beats 1 radio show how astrology is rooted in real science.
[What Pharrell Reads To His Son About Stars]
Miller prefaces her definition: “A lot of people think it’s about predestinations but it [astrology] has NOTHING to do with that. It’s the study of mathematical cycles.” She explains that astrological signs like Gemini and Leo don’t tell you about your personality, it’s the planets that rule the signs.” Miller emphasizes: “Nature teaches us everything.” But scientists including those at Berkeley, argue: “Astrology is not a very scientific way to answer questions. Although astrologers seek to explain the natural world, they don’t usually attempt to critically evaluate whether those explanations are valid — and this is a key part of science. The community of scientists evaluates its ideas against evidence from the natural world and rejects or modifies those ideas when evidence doesn’t support them. Astrologers do not take the same critical perspective on their own astrological ideas.”
