Michelle Mockbee was head of payroll at the ThermoFisher Scientific warehouse in Florence, Kentucky. The day after Memorial Day in 2012, during the early shift, she was found murdered, bludgeoned to death, in the warehouse office. Co-workers who were present at the time of the murder became suspects. Then the sheriff’s department then narrowed it down to one, janitor David Dooley.

Dooley’s testimony about his whereabouts the morning Mockbee’s body was discovered conflicted with what he told police earlier. Although prosecutors could not provide any physical evidence (no weapon, no DNA), Dooley was convicted of kidnapping and murdering Mockbee (and for tampering with evidence). He was sentenced to life in prison. At his sentencing, he declared, “I did not kill Michelle Mockbee.” In January 2015, Dooley hired a new lawyer and filed an appeal. Dateline NBC will re-air its investigation by Josh Mankiewicz on September 4 at 10pm.
