Standup comedian Derek Hughes didn’t “wow” Mel B the first time he performed on America’s Got Talent. But he wowed her on stage at Radio City Music Hall. The smart, natural-born performer Hughes asked Mel B to join him on stage for a card trick — or a series of card tricks — where she had no choice but to be in his thrall. Hughes’ slight of hand was amazing and his charm was, well, charming.
Judge Howie Mandel was impressed. “You’re working on all cylinders!” he told Hughes. Howard Stern agreed. Stern went as far to compare Hughes to the late great “superstar of illusion” Doug Henning, who Stern said he saw perform in a place like Radio City. “You don’t know how much that means,” said a teary-eyed Hughes. America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8pm on NBC.
