Glen Campbell’s song “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” is up for Best Original Song at the Oscars. It appears on the soundtrack to the documentary film Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me. The song was inspired by something his co-writer, Julian Raymond, heard Campbell say. Lots of people had been asking Campbell how he’s doing, how he’s coping with Alzheimer’s disease. Campbell told Raymond, “I don’t know what everybody’s worried about. It’s not like I’m going to miss anyone, anyway.”
The 78-year-old country legend will be honored at the Oscars with a tribute from Tim McGraw who will perform the song –“I’m Not Going To Miss You” By Glen Campbell and Julian Raymond. The song was recorded specifically for the “I’ll Be Me” documentary about Campbell, who won 5 Grammys. Much of it contains how his wife Kim’s handles the singer’s condition, which they made public in 2011. The first verses set the stage for driving home what will happen. Full lyrics can be found on Genius:
I’m still here, but yet I’m gone
I don’t play guitar or sing my songs
They never defined who I am
The man that loves you ’til the end
You’re the last person I will love
You’re the last face I will recall
And best of all, I’m not gonna miss you
Not gonna miss you
The sorrowful tune with the grim silver lining outlook ends with the repeated refrain “I’m not gonna miss you.”
