The Indian dramedy, PK, is showing in theaters in Europe this week. The film is directed and produced by Rajkumar Hirani who says it is “a satire on ‘God and godmen.’” PK, portrayed by Aamir Khan, is an alien stranded on earth. With the help on his human friend Bhairon Singh (Sanjay Dutt), PK learns some Earth customs. For Americans, it’s not a stretch to compare PK to Will Ferrell’s portrayal of Elf. Put God in the Santa role. In PK, a layman asks questions about God and whether the almighty himself will come down to earth — not unlike those James Caan-like New Yorkers who doubt the existence of Santa even when he touches down in Central Park.
The All India Human Rights and Social Justice Front tried to ban the release of PK, but the Supreme Court dismissed their plea. Bollywood Hungama called the film, “a solid entertainer that will surely entertain the masses and classes alike.”
