The Kids Are Alright is about the Clearys, an Irish Catholic family of 10 living in the suburbs of Los Angeles in the early 1970s. Husband Mike (Michael Cudlitz) and wife Peggy (Mary McCormack) are parents to eight sons. When their eldest son, Lawrence, announces that he’s dropping out of the seminary, the family is turned upside down…but they never miss mass at their local church.
[Dooley played the lovable dad in Sixteen Candles]
The priest at their church is portrayed by Paul Dooley. The 90-year-old actor is known for his roles in the films Hairspray (Mr. Spritzer), A Mighty Wind (George Menschell), Sixteen Candles (Molly Ringwald’s dad), Popeye (Wimpy), and Breaking Away (Ciao, Papa!), among many others. Dooley is also recognized for his recurring roles on Curb Your Enthusiasm (as Cheryl’s dad), The Practice (Judge Philip Swackheim), and Grace Under Fire (John Shirley), and among many others. And Dooley voices Sarge in the Cars movies! The Kids Are All Right airs Tuesdays at 8:30 pm on ABC, right after The Conners.

Happy 90th b’day to the “Movie Dad” of @MollyRingwald in 16 CANDLES, @DennisChristo4 in BREAKING AWAY, @JuliaRoberts in RUNAWAY BRIDE + more. He’s been a familiar face + voice (Sarge in CARS) for more than 50 years. #PaulDooley pic.twitter.com/NOf8tOr7SW
