The 1973 song is also the title of John’s seventh studio album. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is widely considered Elton John’s best — his most popular and best selling LP. John’s longtime music partner Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics in two and a half weeks, and John recorded it two weeks at the Château d’Hérouville in France, where Vincent van Gogh is buried. The song, based on imagery from The Wizard of Oz, is about wanting to go back in time, to live a simpler life. The lyrics include the lines: “I should have stayed on the farm/ I should have listened to my old man.” The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
