The 48 Hours episode “Who Killed Fabio?” investigates the murder of popular Los Angeles hairstylist Fabio Sementilli. On January 23, 2017, the 49-year-old was stabbed to death in his backyard. It looked like a robbery gone wrong. LAPD detectives initially suspected the Knock-Knock burglars who had been stealing jewelry from the homes of celebrities including former NBA basketball star Derek Fisher ($300k), singers Nicki Minaj ($175k), and Alanis Morrisette ($2M). CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller interviews the family of Fabio including his son (see photo above) and his sister Mirella Rota Sementilli. Both were shocked to learn that Fabio’s wife Monica Sementilli and her boyfriend Robert Baker were arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Monica was Fabio’s second wife; they had been married for nearly 20 years. Mirella says: “There was no red flag.”
Investigators suspect Monica planned the murder and Baker and another man did the killing. They also believe the motive was Fabio Sementilli’s $1.6 million insurance policy which according to the Toronto Sun, Monica “was already asking about on the day he died.” That day, Monica went shopping and allegedly waited for her youngest daughter to arrive home and find her father stabbed in the face, neck, and upper body. Monica Sementilli and Robert Baker have pleaded not guilty. While in court, Monica Sementilli’s attorney Leonard Levine filed a motion for the return of Monica’s computer “to allow her children to apply for college.” It was seized by a search warrant. Investigators say Monica sent an e-mail to Baker telling him how to gain access into the house. The judge decided not to rule on the request yet. 48 Hours airs Saturdays at 10pm on CBS.
