There aren’t many singers who can do a P!nk song justice, but Brooke Simpson on The Voice is one of them. Brooke is one of the three fierce artists left on Miley Cyrus‘ team — the others are Ashland Craft and Janice Freeman. For her Top 11 live performance, Brooke will sing P!nk’s new single “What About Us” which was released this fall. It starts off as a ballad and then turns into a dance floor anthem. During the song, P!nk’s vocals span one and a half octaves.

There’s some mystery around the meaning of the song. Johnny McDaid, who co-wrote the song with P!nk and Steve Mac, wouldn’t discuss the specific meaning. McDaid did say: “I have a thing that every songwriting session that I go into, it’s such a sacred space and I don’t ever think about what a song is for. It’s really just about allowing it to happen and be whatever it decides to be.” Patrick Crowley at Billboard suggests the lyrics could be interpreted as “a plea for guidance in this confusing political climate.” The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
