Boy Band is a new TV talent competition on ABC that’s searching for members of the next big Boy Band. In the premiere episode, 30 young men (as young as 14, and as “old” as 24) bring their game and perform in front of Backstreet Boys star Nick Carter, Spice Girls vet Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), and legendary music producer Timbaland. The winner gets a recording contract with Disney Music Group’s Hollywood Records.

The youngest contestant on Boy Band is 14-year-old Jay “J Hype” Gilbert from Las Vegas, Nevada. When he gets the chance to perform alone, J Hype demonstrates his Beatbox skills. When host Rita Ora asks Timbaland for his opinion, he says, “That was amazing. But he cheated.” Timbaland explains by saying the band gave J Hype the baseline. To give J Hype another chance to prove himself, Timbaland grabs a mic and joins J Hype on stage. After their brief performance together, Timbaland says, “He’s good.” Boy Band airs Thursdays at 8pm on ABC.
