In the Gotham episode ‘Mad City: Beware the Green-Eyed Monster’, while the virus spreads through Gotham and Mario and Gordon (Ben McKenzie) square off before the wedding, Barbara (Erin Richards) barges into Nygma’s (Cory Michael Smith) office. She’s surprised to see him back to work and not out there trying to track down who killed his lady love Isabella (Chelsea Spack). Nygma goes on to say that he has spies all over the city and he’s certain they will find the person. “And then I will strike,” he says with a smile. That’s when Barbara fake coughs “Penguin.” Nygma gets a laugh at the cough and says, “That’s absurd.”
When Nygma says Penguin doesn’t have a motive, Barbara says he has the oldest motive in the book. “Rich men want it, wise men know it, the poor all need it…” Barbara says until Nygma interrupts and says “love.” As Barbara says, “And the penny drops…” Gotham airs Mondays at 8pm on FOX.
