Quantum Break is dispensing pirate justice with a patch. No this isn’t one of software’s normal patches — like Microsoft might release for its operating systems. It’s an actual patch, or an actual virtual patch more aptly. If the game detects you’re playing a pirated version of the game it gives its protagonist Jack Joyce an eye patch, natch. In a comment on the Piracy Easter Egg, reddit game sage disastrom says the eye patch shame sometimes afflicts honest gamers too. Disastrom owns the game but the patch appears anyway if a player is logged out of the Windows store.
Eurogamer reports that Remedy, the Quantum Break dev, also used an eye patch in Alan Wake. You can check out Quantum Break Windows 10 FAQ here. One answer you’ll find there is that if Jack looks like a pirate, “DRM might’ve accidentally triggered.” DRM is digital rights management.
