Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is a calculating man. That’s in a good way — he’s got to be calculating for a couple of reasons. First, you don’t get to where The Rock is in Hollywood without making some very well-calculated career decisions. Second, because of that The Rock has to also be on top of calculating his money — no easy task for a man who made at least $32 million last year alone. So safe to say when Johnson speaks out, even in a quick tweet about a film he’s not even in, he’s doing so with a purpose.
Johnson just tweeted his congrats to Deadpool and RR (Ryan Reynolds) for rocking the box office and “switch(ing) up on how superhero movies are made.” This is doubly interesting because The Rock is signed to play Black Adam in Shazam! — a superhero concoction due out in 2019, by which time many suspect the superhero genre mayhave finally exhausted itself. That is, unless it “switches up” quite a bit. The multi-talented Johnson can inject Ryan Reynolds-style humor into his roles in a way many other square-jawed leading men can’t quite manage. Is Rock hinting that Shazam! will really shake up the genre, taking off from Deadpool‘s switch and forever rewiring how these things are made? Johnson just sent a message that, properly used, his unique versatility is the key to a genre-busting Shazam!
So cool to see #Deadpool‘s massive box office success. Very happy for RR & filmmakers. Way to switch it up on how superhero movies are made.
