Would you stick an appendage through a hole in the wall without knowing who or what was on the other side? While aficionados of what is known in French as Le Trou de Gloire will certainly answer “Yes!” most people would balk at the idea. Especially if on the other side of the wall was a tattoo artist. But a few brave souls at the Whole Glory exhibition at New York’s Milk Gallery volunteered to have Scott Campbell tattoo their arms without having any idea what he would choose to do.
Campbell, whose clients include Sting and Robert Downey, Jr., decided to host the exhibition because “as a tattoo artist, you never have absolute freedom in what you create. Your canvas always has an opinion on what is going on them, which is great because sometimes you get inspired by the person, and the piece becomes a reaction to them.” He posted the results on Instagram with the message to each person he inked: “Thank you for your confidence.”
