In The Leftovers episode “Orange Sticker,” an earthquake shakes the town of Miracle and a number of people disappear. Nora (Carrie Coon) wakes up and finds Kevin (Justin Theroux) is gone. When she runs next door to the Murphys, she learns that Evie (Jasmin Savoy Brown) never came home after spending the night with two of her friends. When Kevin wakes up in a drained pond — the exact spot where Evie and her friends disappeared from — things get surreal. According to WatchingTheLeftovers.com, the series co-creator Damon Lindelof explains: “Kevin gets rick-rolled.’
Rickrolling refers to the bait and switch Internet meme. It’s when someone posts a hyperlink that you think is relevant to the topic at hand but then leads to the 1987 Rick Astley music video “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Those who click on the link are said to have been rickrolled. The Leftovers airs Sundays at 9pm on HBO.
