Melissa Moore is the daughter of Keith Jesperson aka the “Happy Face Killer.” In the 1990s, after his divorce from Moore’s mother was finalized (they were married for 14 years), Jesperson went on a killing spree. The long-haul truck driver killed eight women. In 1995 he turned himself in. The sadistic name — happy face killer — comes because Jesperson left smiley face drawings on his confession letters.) Jesperson is now serving three consecutive life sentences in Oregon’s state penitentiary. Melissa Moore was 15 at the time.
Moore is now in her thirties, married and the mother of two children. For years she kept her family’s horrible past a secret. When her kids asked her about their grandfather, she struggled. She tried to de-stigmatize him in her book, Shattered Silence: The Untold Story of a Serial Killer’s Daughter. Moore actually took her husband and young children to visit her father in prison, but that was nearly 10 years ago. Since then Moore has decided to keep her distance. She will share more of her story on ABC’s 20/20 on July 10 at 10pm.
