Billboard has confirmed that Katy Perry will perform at the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show. Word on the street or gridiron was that the league was asking big star performers to pay to play as last year the broadcast drew a record-breaking 111.5 million viewers. However, this past Saturday while on ESPN’s College Game Day, Perry said, “I’m not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl.”
When Katy Perry says she’s “not the kind of girl” she’s not taking a moral stance. The fact is she doesn’t need to pay to play. She’s the most popular person on Twitter with 58.1 million followers. She doesn’t need the extra exposure. Katy Perry paying the NFL (7.5 million followers) would be like Taylor Swift (45 million Twitter followers) going out of her way to notify The New York Times (13.5 million) when she’s about to drop a new single. She can garner as much attention as she wants, on her own.
