Singer Willow Smith, daughter of Hollywood royalty couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, has a new single out — a cover of King Krule’s “Easy Easy.” The heavy, grungy beat is a far cry from her 2010 pop hit “Whip My Hair” which peaked at No. 11 on the Hot 100 chart. (She was nine at the time.) But Willow doesn’t care about making a hit.
Willow recently turned down an invitation from Jay-Z to star in his big budget film remake of Annie. (Quvenzhané Wallis of 12 Years A Slave and Beasts of the Southern Wild got the part.) Will Smith, a co-producer of Annie, said of Willow’s decision: “she just didn’t want to do it.” Willow wants to pursue a singing career, and that’s what she’s doing. Her singles “21st Century Girl” and “Fireball” didn’t do as well as on the charts as “Whip My Hair” but as Willow says: “Everybody falls down and scrapes their knees and elbows but they eventually get back up.” She said that in 2011. She was 10.
