The Dateline NBC episode “The Feud” investigates the feud between Timothy Newman and Joseph Campbell near Augusta, Montana. Outdoorsman Newman once had permission to cross Campbell’s private property in order to get to public forest land (Campbell and his wife Tani are the owners of the nearby Diamond Bar X dude ranch) but that privilege was later denied by Campbell. For 13 years Newman and Campbell argued — until October 18, 2013 when Campbell shot Newman twice in the chest, killing him. At the time of his death, Newman was armed and on Campbell’s property. Campbell said Newman drew his gun first, and that he shot Newman in self-defense.
Campbell was eventually arrested for the murder of Newman. In March 2016, a mistrial in the deliberate homicide case was declared. The Independent Record reported: After more than 12 hours of deliberation, jurors told the judge they were “hopelessly deadlocked.” Three weeks later, the State Assistant Attorney Generals filed for a retrial. Dateline NBC airs Fridays at 10pm.
