Practicing his customary charming banter with one of the Wheel of Fortune contestants, Pat Sajak mentioned the military service of Dave from Los Angeles on the program that aired nationally on April 22. Dave had served in the US Navy in Vietnam in 1967 — and he felt compelled to mention that he believed his service coincided with Sajak’s own Vietnam service. Vietnam and all it has come to signify isn’t something that routinely darkens the brightly-colored, decidedly upbeat set of Wheel of Fortune.
Sajak, keeper of that eternal upbeat flame on Wheel, was ready with a quick joke, of course. Hearing that Dave thought he’d been in Vietnam in ’67, Sajak responded: I was there in ’68 actually, but thanks for leaving your note. Sajak served in uniform as a DJ in Vietnam in 1968, working for Armed Forces Radio. He talks about the experience in the video below.
