Cara Delevingne is changing the fashion game, and she’s changing the identity game too. Now, Delevingne is decidedly NOT a plus-size model making people re-think their ideas of beauty and fitness in regard to how much weight a body carries. But what the pioneering Delevingne is doing is to deconstruct beauty from the proto-pink Barbie-style feminine aesthetic and re-label it with more proto-punk. Note the sneering lips below.
Yet it’s hard to cast off the pink for the punk altogether — after all, Be Dior Be Pink (#bediorbepink) is one of the taglines she’s hired to promote. Ah, complex modern life! Of course there’s the catch-all that allows it all. Femininity? “It can be anything you want it to be.”
That’s what Delevingne’s new pitch for Dior proposes “Femininity doesn’t have to be pretty. It can be androgynous and it can be punk. It can be anything you want it to be.”
